You may be considering seeing a Registered Dietitian to help you with your nutrition-related goals and clear up some of the confusion around diet advice. Working with a Dietitian is one of the best ways to get individualized guidance to help you improve your health. Before meeting, knowing what to expect from your visit may be helpful.
Before Your Session
Prior to your initial consultation, you will likely be asked to complete some forms. These forms may consist of a:
Client-Dietitian Contract
Health History Form
3-day Food Log
Here are some tips for preparing for your session:
Come prepared with specific goals in mind- It’s beneficial to both you and your Dietitian if you are clear on what you hope to get out of nutrition counseling. During the initial consultation, your Dietitian will help define these goals further.
Bring a pen & paper- taking notes during your session will help you retain more information and lead to higher rates of success.
Choose a comfortable, quiet place for virtual sessions- will make the visit more efficient and pleasant.
Relax- arrive to your session a few minutes prior to the scheduled time and take a few deep breaths. This will help you focus more clearly, and feel at ease.
During Your Initial Visit
The initial consultation usually takes around 45-60 minutes and consists of an in-depth look at your goals, health history, and current dietary and lifestyle habits. This detailed process will lay the groundwork for a personalized plan.
Counseling
Your Dietitian will consider all aspects of the information discussed and provide tailored nutrition counseling directed toward helping you reach your specific goals. This may include setting weekly goals with a clear action plan on how to get started.
Education
With all the nutrition advice out there today, a Dietitian will set the facts straight based on science-backed evidence. In addition to nutrition counseling, your Dietitian will provide education as needed. This will help you better understand the “why” behind the goals which are set.
Follow-up Appointments
You should expect to have a follow-up visit. This will help to guide you towards making life-long changes, which inevitably take time. You’ll likely have several follow-up appointments, over the course of a few months.
During the visits, you will go over goals, track progress, and attend to any obstacles along the way. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions, talk about what’s working/ what’s not, and receive feedback and support.
